Lesson Programme
Please find information on your weekly lesson programme. This programme is followed across all pools by every instructor and is planned and delivered in line with the National Teaching Plan.

FRONT CRAWL | Water Skills
Your instructor will offer a range of water skills tuition as part of your swimmer’s stage. |
WEEK 2
(11th -17th September 2023) |
FRONT CRAWL | Entries and exits
We will practice safe entries and exits during your lessons. For swimmers at Thomas More Catholic School, The Beach, and Woldingham your instructor may introduce diving. At our other pools, we will focus on jumping into the pool as well as safe streamlining activities to the bottom of the pool. |
WEEK 3
(18th -24th September 2023) |
BACKSTROKE | Submersions
Swimmers will be taught how to safely submerge based on their ability. For advanced swimmers, the focus will be on breath control for longer periods of time, whilst beginner swimmers will build water confidence with the use of toys and equipment. |
WEEK 4 (25th September – 1st October 2023) |
BACKSTROKE | Floatations
Ahead of changing direction lesson, swimmers will receive floatation tuition. For swimmers up to Stage 2, we will develop a flat floating body position and more advanced swimmers will learn skills such as treading water, skulling and synchronised swimming. |

Changing direction
As part of your swimming journey, your swimmer will be taught how to change direction and body position as part of personal water safety and general water skills practices. For advanced swimmers, we may introduce forward rolls, tumble turns and log rolls, for beginner and intermediate swimmers (Duckling and up to Stage 2), we introduce ‘flip and float’, which is a personal water safety skill ahead of our water safety lesson. |

Water Safety
We will offer water safety skills to all swimmers. |
23rd -29th October 2023 (inclusive) | HALF TERM – No swimming lessons | There are no weekly lessons during this week. We are instead running October Half Term Fast Track Courses. |

Streamlining
Streamlining is important at all stages of the learn to swim programme. For higher ability swimmers your instructor may have planned diving practices or streamlining practices through hoops or to submerged objects. For Duckling swimmers and lower stages, your instructor may focus on ‘zooms’ or streamlining the body position through floating practices. |

For the last 15 minutes of your lesson, every swimmer will receive a water safety lesson focussed on staying safe around water. This will be delivered in an age and ability-appropriate manner. |
