WEEK 1 (22/04-27/04) |
FRONT CRAWL |
Streamlining |
- We will focus on streamlining, which can include pushes and glides on the front and back (ability applicable). For example, advanced swimmers may also focus on developing a longer glide from the wall to an underwater swim in a streamlined position.
- Ensure all streamlining practices are safe, and instruct every swimmer to protect their heads with arms outstretched permanently.
|
WEEK 2 (28/04-04/05) |
BACKSTROKE |
Floatation and Balance |
- Focus on teaching in an age-appropriate manner. For younger swimmers, you may want to accompany the practice with a song or game, such as ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.
- For older and more advanced swimmers, floatation involves skulling, treading water, and flipping and floating.
|
WEEK 3 (05/05-11/05) |
BACKSTROKE |
Rotation and Orientation |
Following the previous week of floatation, we will focus on rotations. For our beginner swimmers, this may still involve floating forms, such as moving from front to back. For our more advanced swimmers, rotations may involve somersaults and synchronised swimming. |
WEEK 4 (12/05-18/05) |
- BREASTSTROKE (Stage 2 and above)
- FRONT CRAWL (Stage 1 and below, including Ducklings)
|
Changing direction (travel and coordination)
|
Stage 2 swimmers are to be introduced to Breaststroke leg kicks. This should not be progressed onto arm action; the focus must remain on developing the correct leg kick. For some Stage 2 classes, the structure may be most beneficial to split 15 minutes of Front crawl and then Breaststroke legs.
For swimmers in Stage 2 and below, changing direction will involve practices such as turning to look at the wall, orientating themselves in the water, turning and taking steps towards the wall, or simply introducing the concept of swimming on their back and returning to the wall.
|
WEEK 5 (19/05-25/05) |
- BREASTSTROKE (Stage 2 and above)
- FRONT CRAWL (Stage 1 and below, including Ducklings)
|
- Diving and jumping (The Beach and Woldingham only) (entry and exits)
- Jumping (Thomas More Catholic School only) (entry and exits)
- Changing direction (travel and coordination) (all other locations)
|
We will be focusing on the following water skills during your lessons:
- The Beach and Woldingham – Jumping and Diving (entry and exits)
- Thomas More – Jumping (entry and exits)
- St Giles, Keston and The Hayes – Changing directions (travel and coordination)
- We will practice safe entries and exits during your lessons at The Beach and Woldingham.
- Changing directions for all other locations is a progression from the previous week; for example, if the previous week a class was focusing on swimming 5m out to the teacher and returning to the wall, the progression may be to either move this into the deeper part of the pool or advance and focus on a longer distance.
- No jumping will be performed at St Giles School, The Hayes Primary School, or Keston Primary School.
|
BREAK (26/05-01/06) |
MAY HALF-TERM BREAK |
|
No weekly lessons run between Monday, May 26th to Sunday, June 1st 2025 (inclusive). May Half-Term Fast Track Courses will be taking place from Tuesday 27th to Friday 30th May 2025 (4 days) at Thomas More Catholic School, Purley between the times of 9:00-11:00 am.
|
WEEK 6 (02/06-08/06) |
- BUTTERFLY (Stage 3 and above)
- BACKSTROKE (Stage 2 and below, including Ducklings)
|
Aquatic breathing |
Aquatic breathing can involve toys for our beginner swimmers and blowing the toy a short distance whilst moving. For our advanced swimmers, this may involve a push and glide submerging under the water past the 5m flags.
Please ensure all push and glide practices are safe, and every swimmer is instructed to always protect their heads with arms outstretched.
|
WEEK 7 (09/06-15/06) |

WEEK 8 (16/06-22/06) |
Drowning Prevention Week!
|
Water safety |
- Drowning Prevention Week (DPW) is the biggest campaign of the year by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, targeting families, carers, teachers and instructors of children aged five to fifteen years old with the aim of educating them about water safety.
- The first 15-minutes of the lesson will be working on Backstroke. The final 15-minutes of your swimming lesson will consist of water safety activities and skills. We will also be encouraging swimmers to partake without the use of goggles during their lessons; beginner swimmers may focus on placing their faces in the water, and more advanced swimmers will focus on swimming short distances without goggles, incorporating water safety skills. All team members will receive an email detailing further information on this week’s campaign.
|
WEEK 9 (23/06-29/06) |
- BREASTSTROKE (Stage 2 and above)
- BACKSTROKE (Stage 1 and below, including Ducklings)
|
Floatation and balance

- BUTTERFLY (Stage 3 and above)
- FRONT CRAWL (Stage 2 and below, including Ducklings)
|
Submersions (under and through games) (aquatic breathing)
|
- During this week’s lessons, we will focus on submersions under and through activities. Beginner swimmers may submerge and walk through the hoop or under a noodle bridge. For our more advanced swimmers, this may focus on swimming through hoops at the bottom of the pool. We want to ensure that all swimmers are challenged.
|
WEEK 11 (07/07-13/07) |
FRONT CRAWL |
Submersions (aquatic breathing) (without the use of goggles)
|
- We will focus on swimming and submersions without using goggles to reinforce water safety skills and ensure swimmers do not become reliant on only swimming with goggles.
- Beginner swimmers may focus on placing their faces in the water, and more advanced swimmers will focus on swimming short distances without goggles.
