Returning with Confidence

How we're returning safely in September

🎉 We're excited to welcome back our Swimmers in September!
Your safety, as well as the safety of our colleagues and teachers, is and always will be our number one priority. In compliance with government guidance, we have made a number of changes to your Water Babies classes to ensure that your classes are a safe place to be.

We’ve completely redefined our safety procedures to provide the uptmost level of care and consideration for all of our swimmers. If you were swimming with us when classes were suspended, we’ll contact you automatically once we have a date to reopen your pool.

We will provide the full details before we reopen, but here are some of the changes you can expect from your classes with us.

🏊‍♀️ How you can prepare for your new Lessons

Our ‘new normal’ maintains our warm family centred approach, with increased cleaning and hygiene practices, increased social distancing and fewer swimmers in the pool. Your safety is our main priority!

  • Arrive ‘Swim Ready’ for your lesson.
  • Santise your hands on entry. Help us to maintain good hand hygiene by using the hand sanitiser on entry to our facilties and throughout your lesson.
  • One way system at pools
  • Arrive at your allotted changing time, which will be 5 minutes before the start of your lesson. This helps us to minimise the numbers in the facilities and keep to our rigorous cleaning timetable.
  • Keep to the 10 minute changing time once your lesson finishes. Regrettably inline with government and industry standard guidance, showers are out of action.
  • Only one spectator per swimmers/ family swim bubble and where possible, please do not bring siblings.
  • Spectators wear a face covering
  • Ensure your personal and medical information is up to date in case we need to contact NHS Track and Trace.
  • Do not attend your lesson if you have any COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Communicate with us immediately if you present with any COVID-19 symptoms so we can monitor you and contact Track and Trace if required.

ℹ️ Lesson Information
Before your Lessons
  • Complete our online swimmer information form which can be found here.

  • Watch our pool procedure video and read our pool procedures ahead of your lesson.

At the Pool
  • Arrive Swim Ready.
  • Santise your hands on entry.
  • Temperature checks on entry
  • Only arrive at your allotted arrival time
  • Spectators are asked to wear a face covering in the facilities.
  • Contactless sign in to lessons.
  • Allocated changing and seating area.
  • Changing boxes for belongings and clothing
  • Please be aware that only one spectator should be accompanying swimmers. Where possible, please do not bring siblings to lessons.

During your Lessons
  • Staggered lesson timings for lessons.
  • One way system on poolside.
  • Hats and goggles to be put on by parent/guardian.
  • Swim Zones for swimmers to maintain social distancing.
  • Teachers mainly based on the poolside.

If a child does require support, we will ask a member of the team who has appropriate PPE to help. Your child’s safety and happiness is our main priority.

👍 Pool Equipment
  • Every swimmer will be given their own float (variety of colours available) to own and bring to your lesson. This will minimise the sharing of equipment during your lesson and it allows you to clean this at home. We will provide you with information on how to clean your float after your session.
  • Limited equipment. For swimmers who require noodles, arm rings or pull buoys, we will be supplying these, but use will be limited and they will be cleaned between use.
  • At this moment, we will not be lending hats, goggles or towels.
Lost Property

If there is any lost property at a session, we will securely seal it in a bag and will hold it for one week. After this time we will dispose of it.

🐙 Changing Rooms and end of lesson
The use of changing rooms will be limited. We will stagger lessons to ensure that we can accommodate social distancing and our rigorous cleaning procedures.
  • No use of changing rooms before lessons, except to use the toilets.
  • Showers will regrettably not be in use.
  • There will be a 10 minute allotted changing time after your lesson.
  • We suggest bringing a onesie for ease changing.
  • No items to hung up in changing rooms, please keep belongings in your box to avoid contamination of the changing area.
  • Please leave the facilities promptly after you have changed.

🧼 Cleaning and Hygiene Procedures

We will be adopting robust cleaning procedures and will be continually cleaning the pool, changing and reception environments.

Great News – PWTAG, Swim England and PHE have confirmed that correctly maintained chlorinated pools kill COVID-19!

You will see us cleaning throughout your lesson and we have put lots of safeguards in place to keep everyone safe.

  • COVID-19 Officer at every session A COVID-19 Officer will be at every session to ensure that a COVID-19 secure environment is maintained.
  • Regular Chlorine checks. We will be regularly testing the water to ensure that the chemical levels are at the right level to kill COVID-19.
  • Equipment cleaned after every use For any shared equipment, we will be following PWTAG cleaning guidance.
  • Removing disposable shoe covers and replacing with flip flops for spectators. We will be removing our blue shoe covers and instead will give each family a pair of flip flops for spectators to wear around the facilities. This ensures we remove any potential frequent touch points and minimise our single use plastics.
  • GW team will be wearing PPE

Frequently Asked Questions
How will lessons be different?

We will still maintain our friendly, supportive and fun lessons. We will follow all industry best practices and government guidance for swimming lessons to maintain a COVID-19 secure environment. We will be limiting the use of equipment and focussing on lots of fun practices to build on water and safety skills.

Teachers at certain pool locations will be mainly based on the poolside and there will be social distancing at all locations. There may be different entry and exit points at certain locations and we may stagger lesson times to maintain social distancing as per government guidance.

My swimmer has not swam since lockdown. How is this taken into consideration?

For the majority of swimmers they will not have entered a swimming pool for at least 6 months. For swimmers with Great Waves pre-lockdown, we have up to date records of your swimmer’s learning journey up until lockdown. We will be offering a short free trial for all swimmers on your return, so we can assess your swimmer and put their mind at ease getting back into the pool. We will take lessons at the swimmer’s pace and will be re-learning all skills taught from February 2020 onwards.

For new swimmers, we will offer a free trial session to assess your swimmer(s). Our programme will then be taught at the pace of your swimmer.

A member of my household is unwell and has COVID-19 symptoms, should I attend my lesson?

If you, your swimmer or anyone in your household presents with any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not attend your lesson adopt the following:

  1. Contact NHS for a free COVID-19 test.
  2. Do not attend your lesson and inform us that a member of your household is symptomatic. This will allow us to track and monitor you, so we can plan your return if you are negative or once you have completed your self-isolation period.
  3. Follow NHS advice based on your test result. For further information, please see our COVID-19 policy.
My swimmer(s) missed a lesson what are our options?

If your swimmer misses a lesson, we will endeavour to offer an alternative lesson. Please see our catch-up policy for information on catch-up lessons. For further information, please see our Catch-up policy.

We missed a lesson due to a positive COVID-19 test, what happens to the missed lessons?

If you test positive for COVID-19 or are instructed to self isolate by NHS Track and Trace you may be unable to attend lessons for potentially up to 14 days.

We do not want this to impact swimmer progress and so we are able to offer a COVID-19 Recovery lesson.

Once you are able to return to the pool your swimmer would be able to participate in a Recovery lesson. These lessons will be organised in addition to your normal lessons. They differ from Catch-up lessons as they focus specifically on what was missed during your self isolation absence. These lessons are designed to recover the skills that will have been missed during the self isolation to set swimmers on a strong footing returning to lessons.

If this is not possible, we are able to offer a maximum of two credit lessons per swimmer.

For further information, please see our Recovery Lesson and Credit Policy.

What happens if there is a local lockdown?

We will follow government guidance and will communicate with you as soon as we know. Please see our COVID-19 policy for more information.

How are Great Waves maintaining social distancing?

We have a COVID-19 officer at every session who is responsible for maintaining a COVID-19 secure environment.

We have introduced lots of new measures to ensure social distancing including staggered start times, one way systems around the pool.

We are limiting the number of spectators to one per swimmer/ family and where possible, please do not bring siblings to the session. Spectators will be allocated seating, so we can ensure social distancing is maintained.

We will also be asking all swimmers to arrive ‘swim ready’ to avoid changing room use.

The Great Waves Team

The GW Team can’t wait to see you at the pool! We are always working hard behind the scenes to keep up to date with all COVID-19 guidance and best practices. As a team, we are…

  • Completing Industry specific COVID-19 training.
  • Pool specific training on new procedures, cleaning routines and maintaining a COVID-19 secure environment.
  • Updated First aid and rescue guidance based on industry guidance.

We know that there will be changes to the current guidance and we will update training and procedures as changes are made.

We're returning to lessons in September! 🎉
